Coaching The Whole Person
When I began my
journey of self-discovery over twenty- five years ago, I was interested in two
outcomes:
- feeling free to
live in accordance with my values and principles.
- connecting more
easily and deeply with others.
I didn’t have any
idea where to start but as I became more involved, both by being coached and by
providing coaching, I did close the gap between how I wanted to live and how I
actually lived. Coaching was a natural fit as it combined service,
collaboration, creativity, learning and teaching that resulted in clients’ ease
and competence to achieve desired results.
Unlike consulting,
it is not my job to fix clients or come up with the solutions to their problems.
My job is to help clients discover and bring meaning to their lives in the
domain of their choosing, from enhanced leadership to figuring out their life’s
purpose. Coaching strengthens the four domains of the human being—the intellect,
emotions, physical body and spirit so that the client is more competent to
achieve his or her goals.
Many of us think
that if we keep reading, watching television or talking with others we will
eventually have the results we want. We tell ourselves, “If I only knew more,
then I would have the career or relationship I want.”
Our insistence upon
controlling our attitudes and feelings gives us a sense that we really do have
some power to affect our destiny.
Life doesn’t work
that way. Compartmentalizing our feelings, ignoring our spirit, or abusing our
physical bodies all contribute to our increased dissatisfaction with ourselves,
our careers, our relationships. When we begin to pay attention to and integrate
the wisdom we get from all four domains, we are giving ourselves the opportunity
to have the outcomes about which we dream.
Many of us look at
the “whole being ” as if it is something outside of the person we know and love.
The whole being is a mystery –something we live with but never fully understand.
Some of us treat our physical body like it’s an old vehicle that we drive around
from place to place, hoping that it won’t break down or get hit. Or we park
ourselves in jobs or relationships that don’t fit, hoping that with minimal
attention, we can keep our body and soul running.
One of the easiest
ways to gain access to those domains about which we are unfamiliar or even
frightened is to work with the body. I have discovered somatic coaching as a
way to uncover and peel away the layers of crud that obfuscate our hopes and
dreams. The physical body contains not only the biological parts but also serves
as the connector to our emotional and spiritual selves. It is no accident that
metaphorically the heart is found in the body while the brain is in the head. We
know the difference between speaking from the heart and speaking from the head.
Coaches insist that clients listen and respond to messages from both these
entities.
Coaching the whole
self means helping the individual gain greater freedom and ease to move through
life’s ups and downs. By learning how to listen to the cues our bodies and
emotions present, we respond more honestly and openly to what is going on around
us. We begin to embody the qualities we embrace in ourselves and in others.
Our tendency to
remain on automatic pilot when we feel confronted by life’s events will
dissipate the more we learn to live in congruence with the whole self.
Clients experience
greater ease in their communication, increased courage to stand up for their
beliefs, while learning how respect others. By integrating the mind, body,
spirit and emotions, a person develops greater capacity to navigate change at
work and at home.
If you find
yourself not getting the results you want in your career, or personal life, a
coaching relationship will bring you closer to the outcomes you wish to have.
